What the app does
Filing is broken into a guided sequence rather than presented as a form. The interface carries the structure so the user does not have to hold the tax logic in their head, which is the difference between a return that gets finished and one that gets abandoned in March.
Designing for once-a-year users
Software used daily can afford a learning curve. Software used once a year cannot: every returning user is effectively a new user. That constraint drove the interface toward fewer decisions per screen and clearer recovery when something is entered wrong.
